Recycling Center -Materials Recovery Facility

Laredo Solid Waste Recycling Division coordinates tours of the Landfill and Recycling Center. Interested citizens, students, and/or groups get to see how the landfill is operated to meet federal, state, and local regulations. Groups also learn how the disposal dells at the landfill are constructed to manage the waste appropriately. The Materials Recovery Facility is where the recycling materials are sorted and prepared for marketing to end-user manufacturers.

Schedule a tour of the MRF
  • If you'd like to schedule a tour of the MRF for your group or classroom you may do so by filling out the form.
  • MRF tours are available Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., except on city holidays.
  • Groups are encouraged to visit the MRF in the morning. (Depending on staff availability, tour hours can at times be extended to accommodate after school groups.)

Recycling Tips

  • Find a convenient place to collect recyclable items. Most things come from the kitchen, making it a good spot to set up a recycling center.
  • The great thing about recycling is that it lets you put your favorite old containers, bins, or baskets to use. Assign containers for plastic, and aluminum. To avoid messes, choose solid containers for storing items such as cans that may have a sticky residue.
  • Take leftover plastic bags back to grocery stores where they are collected and reused to make plastic lumber.
  • Check the bottom of plastic items to identify what type of plastic they are. If the type is not recycled at your local center, consider ways to reuse the container.
  • Save water and time when recycling cans and bottles. You no longer need to rinse them out or remove their labels.
  • Recycle junk mail or reuse it as scratch paper. To opt-out of certain junk-mailing lists, go to opt-out.cdt.org.
  • Newspapers, magazines, and white paper can all be recycled as long as the paper is clean and dry. Plastic wrap, stickers, or rubber bands should be removed, but staples and plastic window envelopes are OK.
  • Divide recycling duties among family members and sort items on a daily basis.
  • Print out this list of commonly recycled materials. Post it where you recycle.
